Meet This Year’s Jurors!
Mandy Salter
Mandy Salter has had over a decade of experience in the gallery and museum sector with senior positions. Presently, she is the Director and curator of the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Chief Curator and Collections Manager at the Art Gallery of Windsor as well as Manager of Exhibitions at the Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation, Toronto, Canada. In 2012, Mandy became a consultant with Auctionata.com, and continues to act as their Canadian Art Specialist.
Mandy is an award winning curator and inherent risk-taker who thrives on realizing new connections between art, diverse communities and commerce. Mandy Salter spearheads the integration of art + diverse communities + commerce by working with artists + cultural stakeholders to spark public engagement through art experience.
Matthew Hyland
Matthew Hyland is Director/Curator of Oakville Galleries, a position he has held since 2009. His projects for the Galleries include solo exhibitions with artists such as Valérie Blass (2019), Sojourner Truth Parsons (2017) and Judith Scott (2016), alongside a series of exhibitions that looked at key themes in feminist art practice.
Prior to joining the staff at Oakville Galleries, he held positions at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre and the City of Toronto. His writing has appeared in Border Crossings, Switch and a variety of artists’ monographs. In 2009, he was nominated for the Lorenzo Bonaldi Art Prize, an international award for curators under 30.

Juror’s Comments:
First prize: Renewal
A wonderfully suggestive work that is both carefully wrought and conceptually curious in all the right ways. We were compelled by the "thickness" of this piece, its ability to be evocative but not explanatory, tightly rendered but open-ended. It is an image that asks more questions than it answers, prompting us to return again and again with pleasure.
Second prize: Red Triangle
While this is a work that appears simple enough at first glance, this take on geometric abstraction is a slyly smart one, balancing a rigorous sense of dynamism with the lightness of touch that watercolour necessitates. The result is an image that is both interesting rhythmically and accomplished technically, all while being a delight to look at.
Third prize: Peace in the Woods, Dundas Valley
This painting brings a playful, stripped-down approach to the much-tread tradition of the landscape, injecting it with formal energy and an interesting point of view. A freshly fun take on familiar territory.
